Historic and modern architecture as a stunning backdrop for your wedding
The Venue – Ceremony
The building itself was built in the 18th Century with a modern extension added more recently. Due to this, Wivenhoe House can accommodate most couple’s dream wedding, from grand and sophisticated, to modern and versatile or even an outside ceremony. There are large hotel suites upstairs; big enough for a group of bridesmaids to get ready before the wedding service. The drawing rooms are particularly bright with big windows and beautifully decorated making for gorgeous photographs.
The Venue – Reception
The original part of the building offers magnificent spaces for welcome drinks, with access to the garden down a set of steps. It also lends itself perfectly to a sophisticated afternoon tea reception. The function rooms in the modern wing are purpose-built for large parties if you would prefer a traditional disco. They have removable walls accommodating 50 to 150 guests. It can get dark in these rooms so we usually use flash to produce well-lit airy photographs.
Based on the edge of University of Essex campus, it is surprising at how secluded the venue feels. The garden at the rear overlooks the Essex countryside, while to the front there is a short walk down to the picturesque lake. There are numerous photo opportunities for the bride and groom – not forgetting the beautiful, ancient, gnarled tree. The garden is a great space to utilise for lawn games during your summer wedding reception.
This is an excellent wedding venue; it offers flexibility in how you can use the space and offers a range of options to customise your day. For small and intimate weddings the environment is relaxed and self-contained. For larger parties, look no further for a venue that has you covered from getting ready to being wed to going to bed. We highly recommend this grade II listed hotel; there are lots of options for creating the ideal wedding day here.
